Bóly –​ Mohács: Mohács and the Danube floodland

From Sátorhely we take the segregated cycle route along the main road no. 56 to the direction of Mohács, but soon we turn towards Kölked. The village hosts the White Stork Museum. Leaving Kölked and continuing on the Danube dike – taking the same route as for EuroVelo 6 – we approach the town of Mohács.

From Kölked we may take a south detour to Béda-Karapancsa, part of the Danube-Drava National Park. One can get acquainted with the vivid wildlife of the area (including the famous black stork) by organised tours on chariot, canoe or bicycle.

Mohács is a town of 17 thousand inhabitants, located on both sides of the Danube river. Mohács hosts a wide set of different services: accommodations, restaurants, pubs, bicycle shops and repair, banks, swimming pool, railway station. Main attraction of Mohács is the “Busó Walk” (or “Poklade” in Croatian), a local one-week festival in every February, part of the UNESCO Spiritual Heritage. The Poklade is a carnival event of the local šokci people when the local busó’s in their traditional wooden masks cross the Danube and burn a bonfire on the main square with the coffin of the winter. We may get familiar with the tradition by visiting the Busó Court open all year long. Out of the numerous churches of the town it is to be mentioned the byzantine style Votive Church on the main square.

“Mohács I”, a 50-seat passenger catamaran was put in operation in year 2019. The boat was built for passenger and bicycle transportation by which we can get acquainted with the built and natural sights of the area on water and on two wheels.

The Mohács ferry is an important connection between the two banks of the Danube river. After crossing the river the tour may be continued towards Nagybaracska.
