Letenye - Légrád: Letenye and Međimurje county

The Iron Curtain Trail crosses the border to Croatia at Letenye. Main attraction of the small town is the Szapáry-Andrássy castle, which serves as cultural centre. It hosts the local museum and cinema, in 2019 a tourism centre has been established here as well. The 150-year old plane tree in the castle park was “tree of the year” in 2010. The municipal library, designed by architect Imre Makovecz, is also located here, surrounded by wooden sculptures made by Croatian artists. Nearby one can find the local open-air pool and thermal bath, a camping and an apartment house.

In Kotoriba, on the Croatian side, the oldest railway station in Croatia is found, which was built in 1860. Local basket weaving and railway traditions are manifested by a large-size locomotive displayed in the village. Also recommended to visit the late baroque catholic parish church, with its altarpiece and century-old organ.

At Donja Dubrava the artificial riverbed built for the electricity plant meets the Drava river, draining the water of the Dubrava lake. The hydropower plant is located west from the settlement.

On the alternative route on the Hungarian side, in Tótszerdahely, manor of Sári Fedák, primadonna of the turn of the 19-20th century, can be visited, which offers a memorial room and accommodation.

Life of local people has been always connected to the local rivers. This relationship is again strengthening, along with intensive cross-border cooperation, offering water-tourism opportunities. Moreover, panning, which used to be significant in the area, may be also tried.
